Gabon Government Suspends National Team and Bans Aubameyang After AFCON Disaster

The Gabonese government has taken an unprecedented step by suspending the national football team and banning star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang following a disastrous Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.

Gabon exited the tournament at the group stage after losing all three matches, a performance the government described as “disgraceful” and damaging to the country’s sporting reputation. In response, authorities ordered the immediate suspension of the national team, dismissed the coaching staff, and announced that senior players — including Aubameyang — would no longer represent the country under the current administration.

Aubameyang, Gabon’s all-time leading goalscorer and former Arsenal captain, was singled out alongside fellow veteran Bruno Ecuele Manga. While Aubameyang missed Gabon’s final match due to injury, the decision was framed as part of a wider accountability move rather than a single-match issue.

The move has sparked widespread debate across African and global football. Critics argue that government interference in football matters violates FIFA regulations, potentially exposing Gabon to international sanctions if the decision is not reversed. FIFA rules require national football associations to operate independently, without political control.

Aubameyang has since reacted publicly, suggesting that Gabon’s problems run deeper than individual players and calling for structural reform rather than scapegoating.

As it stands, Gabon’s football future is uncertain. The suspension could affect upcoming AFCON qualifiers and World Cup campaigns, while FIFA’s response will be closely watched.
