Bayer Leverkusen have parted ways with Erik ten Hag after only two Bundesliga fixtures in charge. The Dutch coach’s dismissal comes just 62 days into his tenure, making this one of the shortest managerial reigns in recent Bundesliga history.
A Brief and Turbulent Spell
Ten Hag arrived at Leverkusen in July, tasked with stabilising the squad after a turbulent summer that saw key players including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Granit Xhaka, and Jonathan Tah depart. Despite the challenge, expectations remained high for a side that had been competing at the top of German football in recent seasons.
The results, however, didn’t go his way. Leverkusen opened the campaign with a 2–1 home defeat to Hoffenheim, followed by a 3–3 draw against 10-man Werder Bremen—a match where they squandered a 3–1 lead. Those stumbles, coupled with mounting internal pressure, were enough for the club to act swiftly.
Official Statement
In their brief announcement, Bayer Leverkusen confirmed:
“Bayer 04 Leverkusen has parted ways with head coach Erik ten Hag with immediate effect.”
The statement also noted that the assistant coaches will take charge of training and upcoming matches until a permanent replacement is found.
