Arsenal’s transfer window business is far from over, and the latest name on their radar is Bayer Leverkusen’s highly-rated centre-back Piero Hincapié.
The 23-year-old Ecuadorian has emerged as a top target for Mikel Arteta as the Gunners look to strengthen their defensive depth for the new campaign.
The Deal on the Table
Hincapié’s contract at Leverkusen includes a £52 million (€60m) release clause, but Arsenal are reluctant to pay the full fee upfront. Reports suggest the Gunners are exploring ways to either negotiate a reduced deal or structure payments across instalments.
Crucially, Hincapié himself is said to favour a move to North London, making Arsenal the front-runners. The defender has reportedly informed Leverkusen of his desire to leave, putting added pressure on the German champions to negotiate.
Who Might Leave to Make Room?
For Arsenal, the deal hinges not just on money but also on squad balance. Several names could be moved on before Hincapié arrives, including Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fábio Vieira, Albert Sambi Lokonga, and Reiss Nelson.
Kiwior, in particular, looks the most likely to depart, with interest from Serie A clubs growing in recent weeks. His exit could pave the way for Hincapié to slot into Arteta’s system, providing much-needed cover and competition alongside William Saliba and Gabriel.
Tottenham in the Shadows
North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with Hincapié, but according to multiple sources, Spurs have yet to make formal contact with Leverkusen. That lack of action has handed Arsenal an important advantage in the race.
Still, the transfer market can move quickly, and Spurs could yet make things complicated if they decide to enter negotiations late.
Why Hincapié?
The Ecuadorian defender has built a reputation for his speed, anticipation, and ability to play comfortably across the backline, including left-back when required. He was a key figure in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga-winning campaign last season, and at just 23 years old, he represents both immediate quality and long-term value.
For Arteta, Hincapié’s versatility would be invaluable, especially with the demanding schedule of the Premier League, Champions League, and domestic competitions.
