Carrick Plays Down Glasner Rivalry as United Eye Third Spot

This post has already been read 87 times!

Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick has dismissed any suggestion that Sunday’s clash with Crystal Palace carries a personal edge involving Oliver Glasner, insisting his focus remains purely on securing another vital Premier League victory.

With Glasner widely viewed by bookmakers as one of the contenders for the permanent United job, the fixture at Old Trafford could easily have been framed as a managerial audition. Carrick, however, has made it clear that such narratives hold no weight inside the United camp.

Carrick: “It Makes No Difference”

Speaking ahead of the match, Carrick was emphatic that the prospect of facing a rival candidate for the United role is not a motivating factor.

“It is not something that would cross my mind until you mentioned it,” Carrick said.
“It doesn’t make any difference whatsoever.
I have total respect for Crystal Palace and Oliver… but it’s the next game for us.”

The message is consistent with Carrick’s calm, process-driven approach since stepping into the interim role.

United’s Impressive Run

Carrick’s steady leadership has produced immediate results. Since taking charge following Ruben Amorim’s January departure, he has guided Manchester United to:

  • Five wins
  • One draw
  • Unbeaten in six matches

That run has dramatically improved United’s league position. After Aston Villa’s surprise defeat at Wolves on Friday, victory over Palace would lift United into third place for the first time since the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

For Carrick, that league incentive provides all the motivation required.

Palace Struggling Under Glasner

While still respected tactically, Oliver Glasner has endured a turbulent spell at Selhurst Park. Crystal Palace’s campaign has been marked by:

  • Public criticism of the club’s board
  • FA Cup exit to Macclesfield
  • Friction with sections of supporters
  • Inconsistent Premier League form

Despite those issues, Carrick remains wary of Palace’s threat and has urged full concentration from his players.

Team News: Defensive Concerns

United’s defence continues to deal with injury setbacks:

Unavailable

  • Matthijs de Ligt — still out with a back injury after featuring in the 2-1 win over Palace on 30 November

Minor doubt

  • Lisandro Martínez — missed the win at Everton with a calf issue
  • Carrick expects the Argentine back “before very long”

Martínez’s potential return would be a timely boost as United look to maintain their defensive solidity.

Champions League Opportunity

With fifth-placed Chelsea facing tough upcoming fixtures against Arsenal and Aston Villa, United have a golden opportunity to strengthen their hold on a Champions League place.

Carrick, however, is refusing to look too far ahead.

“We are in a decent spot. We feel like we are moving forwards, but it’s just about what’s in front of us… trying to get to where we want to be, which is a little bit higher in the league.”

Match Outlook

Sunday’s encounter could prove pivotal in the top-four race.

Why United are confident

  • Strong recent momentum
  • Home advantage at Old Trafford
  • Growing belief under Carrick

Why Palace remain dangerous

  • Organised defensive structure
  • Quick counter-attacks
  • Physical presence in midfield

If United maintain their current form, they will fancy their chances — but Carrick’s cautious tone suggests he expects a competitive and tightly contested match.
