Jeff Bezos Joins Liverpool Ownership in Blockbuster Deal
Liverpool have entered a fascinating new chapter after owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) agreed to sell around 30% of the club to 1892 Holdings, an investment consortium featuring Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
The deal reportedly values Liverpool at around £5.5 billion, highlighting just how dramatically the club’s value has grown since FSG purchased it for approximately £300 million in 2010.
But this isn’t a full takeover.
FSG will remain Liverpool’s majority owner and retain operational control of the club.
Bezos is expected to remain a passive investor rather than taking a seat on Liverpool’s board.
The consortium is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, the former Queens Park Rangers co-owner, who will become Liverpool’s new vice-chairman.
It also includes investment connected to Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
For Liverpool supporters, the biggest question will inevitably be:
What does having some of the world’s wealthiest investors behind the club mean for Liverpool’s future?
The immediate answer appears to be stability rather than revolution.
FSG remains in charge, but Liverpool now have heavyweight new partners with enormous experience across technology, investment and global business.
This isn’t the end of the FSG era.
It could instead be the beginning of a much bigger Liverpool.
