Majority of Premier League Fans Want VAR Removed, Survey Reveals

A new survey by the Football Supporters’ Association has revealed widespread dissatisfaction among fans regarding the use of the video assistant referee (VAR) in the Premier League.

The findings paint a clear picture: many supporters believe VAR is doing more harm than good.

📊 Fans overwhelmingly against VAR
The survey, which included responses from nearly 8,000 fans across all 20 Premier League clubs, highlights a growing disconnect between football authorities and supporters.

Key findings include:
90% of fans say VAR has not improved the matchday experience
91% believe it has damaged the spontaneity of goal celebrations
94% say it has made watching football on television less enjoyable
These numbers underline a strong sentiment — fans feel the emotional core of football is being lost.

⚠️ “It takes away what football is about”
According to Thomas Concannon, the Premier League network manager at the FSA, supporters are increasingly frustrated with the system.

Fans have raised concerns about:
⏱️ Delays during matches
❌ Questionable accuracy of decisions
🎉 Interrupted celebrations
Concannon stated that VAR is “taking away from what football is meant to be,” particularly those raw, unforgettable moments that define the sport.

🏟️ Premier League responds
Despite the backlash, the Premier League has taken a more balanced stance.

In response to the survey, league officials acknowledged the concerns but emphasized that:
Many fans still support VAR in principle
The focus is now on improving how VAR is used, rather than removing it
This suggests that VAR is unlikely to disappear anytime soon, but changes could be introduced to make it more efficient and less disruptive.

🔍 What happens next?
The debate around VAR continues to divide opinion across football.

While some believe it brings fairness and accuracy, others argue it strips away the passion and unpredictability that make the game special.
With pressure mounting from fans, the Premier League may be forced to:

Speed up decision-making
Improve communication inside stadiums
Increase transparency in calls
