Manchester United vs Ipswich Town: Old Trafford Demands a Response
Manchester United return to Old Trafford on Sunday with something to prove.
A 2–0 opening-day defeat to newly promoted Hull City was certainly not how Michael Carrick wanted to begin the new Premier League campaign. Now United face another promoted side in Ipswich Town—and suddenly a match that looked comfortable on paper carries considerably more pressure.
Ipswich, meanwhile, couldn’t have asked for a much better start. They defeated Sunderland 2–1 in their Premier League opener before beating Leicester City 3–1 in the League Cup. They arrive at Old Trafford believing an upset is possible.
United Have to Show a Reaction
The biggest question isn’t whether Manchester United have better individual players. They do.
The question is whether they can turn that quality into a convincing performance.
Against Hull, United had plenty of the ball but were punished from set pieces. Carrick has resisted the temptation to treat one defeat as a crisis, arguing that United need to examine the details of what went wrong rather than simply blaming effort or leadership.
That makes the opening stages against Ipswich particularly important.
If United start quickly, move the ball with purpose and force Ipswich backwards, Old Trafford could become a very difficult place for the visitors.
But another slow beginning would change the atmosphere completely.
Bruno Could Hold the Key
United should have enough attacking talent to hurt Ipswich.
Bruno Fernandes remains the player capable of producing the pass that changes a game, while Bryan Mbeumo, Marcus Rashford and Matheus Cunha give Carrick several different attacking weapons.
Rashford in particular could be interesting if he starts. Ipswich may defend compactly, meaning United will need runners prepared to attack the space behind the defensive line rather than simply passing around it.
United aren’t at full strength, though.
New signing Carlos Baleba will have to wait for his debut because of an ankle injury, while Amad Diallo is also unavailable. Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte are among United’s other injury problems.
Don’t Underestimate Ipswich
This is where the match becomes interesting.
Ipswich don’t need to dominate possession to cause United problems.
Gary O’Neil can allow United to come forward before asking his side to attack quickly when possession changes hands. Players such as Jack Clarke, Julio Enciso and Daizen Maeda can make those transitions dangerous.
The longer Ipswich remain level, the more confident they should become.
And if they score first?
Then we could have a fascinating afternoon at Old Trafford.
What the Numbers Say
Despite United’s opening defeat, the statistical models still strongly favour the home side.
Opta’s supercomputer gives Manchester United a 66.4% probability of victory, compared with 18.3% for a draw and 15.3% for an Ipswich victory.
History also favours United. Ipswich haven’t beaten them since 1997, although past meetings won’t matter much once Sunday’s game begins.
Prediction
Expect Ipswich to make this uncomfortable.
They have momentum, confidence and little reason to arrive at Old Trafford frightened. But Manchester United’s attacking quality, home advantage and determination to respond after the Hull defeat should eventually make the difference.
