In one of the greatest upsets of the 2025/26 season, Championship side Southampton knocked out Premier League leaders Arsenal with a thrilling 2-1 win in the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final at a rocking St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, April 4, 2026.
The Saints, full of fighting spirit under manager Tonda Eckert, booked their place in the semi-finals at Wembley and reminded everyone why the FA Cup remains the most magical domestic competition in football.
A Dream First Half for the Hosts
Southampton started brightly and fully deserved their lead. In the 35th minute (some reports note 34′ or 36′), Ross Stewart capitalised on a rare defensive lapse from Arsenal. Ben White misjudged a long ball, allowing Stewart to control it brilliantly before firing a powerful finish past goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The home crowd erupted as the Scottish striker wheeled away in celebration. Arsenal, despite their dominance in possession at times, struggled to break down a well-organised and determined Southampton defence before the interval.
Half-time: Southampton 1-0 Arsenal
Pure ecstasy for the Southampton squad as they celebrate Shea Charles’ dramatic late winner.
Heroic Performances and the Magic of the Cup
Ross Stewart led the line with energy and clinical finishing, while Shea Charles made a massive impact from the bench.
The entire Southampton team displayed tremendous organisation, resilience, and belief — classic traits of a cup giant-killing.
For Arsenal, it was a frustrating afternoon. Despite creating opportunities, they were undone by defensive errors and Southampton’s clinical counter-attacking. Viktor Gyökeres’ goal provided a lifeline, but it wasn’t enough on the day.
Mikel Arteta later took full responsibility, urging his players to “show who we are” in the remaining competitions as their hopes of domestic silverware this season came to an end.
Southampton now advance to the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley, where they will face one of Manchester City, Chelsea, West Ham, or Leeds (with the draw taking place on Sunday).
For Arsenal, focus shifts entirely to the Premier League title race and their remaining European commitments. This result serves as a painful but timely reminder of the unpredictability of cup football.
