Tottenham in Talks with Roberto De Zerbi as Manager Search Intensifies

Tottenham Hotspur have entered discussions with Roberto De Zerbi as they look to appoint a new permanent head coach following the departure of Igor Tudor.

Tudor’s exit came by mutual consent after just 44 days in charge, bringing a swift end to a short and turbulent spell. The decision followed a heavy 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, a result that left Spurs hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone.

A club under pressure to act
Tottenham’s leadership, led by chief executive Vinai Venkatesham and sporting director Johan Lange, are now under immediate pressure to stabilise the team.

The timing of Tudor’s departure reflects both sporting concerns and sensitivity, with the club allowing the Croatian time following a personal bereavement before confirming the split.

With only a handful of games remaining in the season, Spurs cannot afford further instability. Every decision now carries significant weight — not just for results, but for the club’s Premier League status.

De Zerbi emerges as the main target
De Zerbi, currently without a club after leaving Marseille earlier this season, has quickly become Tottenham’s preferred option.

The Italian is widely respected for his progressive style of play and his previous success with Brighton & Hove Albion.

His ability to develop players and implement a clear tactical identity makes him an attractive long-term choice.

Initial indications suggest De Zerbi is open to the role, but cautious. He is believed to prefer waiting until the end of the season to assess Tottenham’s situation — particularly whether they remain in the Premier League.

However, discussions are ongoing as Spurs explore the possibility of bringing him in immediately for the final stretch of the campaign, alongside a potential long-term agreement.

Fan backlash adds complexity
While De Zerbi may be the leading candidate, the potential appointment has not been universally welcomed.

Several Tottenham supporter groups have raised concerns over comments he made during his time at Marseille regarding former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.

De Zerbi had publicly described Greenwood as a “good guy” who had “paid a heavy price,” comments that some fans believe downplay the seriousness of past allegations.

Proud Lilywhites, the club’s official LGBTQ+ supporters’ group, expressed concern about what such remarks represent, arguing that leadership at the club must reflect strong values both on and off the pitch.

A decision beyond football
Tottenham now face a complex decision that goes beyond tactics and results.

On one hand, De Zerbi offers a clear footballing identity and long-term potential. On the other, the club must consider the wider implications of his appointment, including fan sentiment and the values it wants to uphold
