Lima, Peru – April 4, 2026

A wave of shock and sorrow swept through Peruvian football on Friday night after a tragic incident at Alejandro Villanueva Stadium (popularly known as Matute) left one fan dead and at least 47 others injured during a passionate pre-derby rally.

The heartbreaking event unfolded in the La Victoria district of Lima as hundreds of Alianza Lima supporters gathered for a festive send-off ahead of the intense Clásico against arch-rivals Universitario de Deportes.

What began as a vibrant celebration of flags, chants, and team spirit quickly descended into chaos.

Details of the Incident
Peru’s Health Minister Juan Carlos Velasco confirmed the fatality and injuries in a statement to the media: “There has been an unfortunate incident at the stadium in which 47 people have been injured… and sadly there is one fatality.”

Emergency services responded swiftly, with 39 victims transferred to hospitals across Lima. Reports indicate three patients are in critical condition.

Some sources mention the total number of injured could be closer to 60, with many suffering from contusions, trauma, and other injuries sustained in the panic.

Initial rumors suggested a partial wall or structural collapse in the southern stands, prompting a rapid mobilization of ambulances and firefighters by the Mobile Emergency Medical Service (SAMU).

However, Alianza Lima firmly denied any structural failure, stating that the tragedy was not caused by falling walls or defects in the stadium infrastructure.

Authorities have not yet released an official cause.

Reports describe the event variably as an unspecified incident, possible overcrowding in the south section, or a stampede triggered by a sudden surge in the enthusiastic crowd.

Investigations are underway to establish exactly what happened.

The Emotional Weight of the Peruvian Clásico
The Alianza Lima vs. Universitario derby is one of South America’s most fiercely contested rivalries.

Known simply as El Clásico, it transcends sport and embodies deep cultural passion, pride, and community identity for fans of both clubs.

Pre-match rallies like Friday’s are a cherished tradition — moments where supporters come together to energize their team.

Tragically, large, emotionally charged gatherings carry inherent risks when crowd management and safety measures are overwhelmed.

This incident serves as a painful reminder that the beautiful game must always prioritize the safety and well-being of its most devoted followers.

Official Response and Ongoing Investigation
Alianza Lima issued a statement expressing profound regret, offering condolences to the victim’s family, and extending support to the injured.

Hospitals in the Lima region were placed on high alert to ensure adequate care.

Peruvian authorities, including fire services and the Ministry of Health, continue to investigate the precise trigger of the chaos.

As more details emerge, the football community — both in Peru and worldwide — stands united in mourning.
