Accra, Ghana – April 13, 2026 — The Ghanaian football community is in mourning following the death of promising young winger Dominic Frimpong, who was fatally shot during a violent armed robbery attack on his club Berekum Chelsea’s team bus.
The 20-year-old forward lost his life on Sunday evening, April 12, 2026, after the bus came under fire from masked gunmen as the team returned from an away Ghana Premier League fixture.
The Incident
Berekum Chelsea had just played FC Samartex in Samreboi (or near Samreboi), suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat in which Frimpong started. On the return journey along the Bibiani–Goaso road near Ahyiresu (also reported as Ayiresu or close to Samreboi), armed robbers blocked the highway.
According to statements from Berekum Chelsea and the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the attackers — described as “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” — forced the bus to stop.
When the driver attempted to reverse, the robbers opened fire. Panic ensued, and players and staff fled into nearby bushes for cover.
Frimpong was struck by a bullet to the head. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
He is the only reported fatality, though some accounts mention other players and officials sustaining injuries or going missing temporarily during the chaos.
The attack occurred around 11pm local time on the Goaso–Bibiani road.
Club and GFA Response
Berekum Chelsea issued a statement confirming the tragedy: “On our way back to Berekum from Samreboi our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road… The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.”
The Ghana Football Association expressed “profound shock and deep sorrow,” describing Frimpong as a dedicated and passionate player whose potential embodied the spirit of the league.
The GFA offered condolences to his family, teammates, and the club.
Ghana Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and are investigating the incident as a suspected armed robbery.
Who Was Dominic Frimpong?
At just 20 years old, Frimpong was seen as a rising talent in the Ghana Premier League. A winger/forward known for his skill and commitment, he had recently joined or been featuring prominently for Berekum Chelsea.
His untimely death has cut short what many believed could have been a bright professional career.
Tributes have poured in across social media and from football stakeholders, highlighting the heartbreak of losing such a young life to senseless violence.
Broader Concerns
This incident shines a harsh light on security challenges faced by teams traveling on Ghanaian roads, particularly after matches when cash or valuables may be assumed to be on board. Road ambushes by armed robbers remain a risk in certain regions, raising questions about player safety and the need for enhanced security measures for league teams.
The Ghana Premier League season continues, but this tragedy has cast a heavy shadow over the competition.
