Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi Out of Coma After Emergency Surgery

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is on the road to recovery after undergoing emergency abdominal surgery that led to him being placed in an induced coma.

The 27-year-old Nigerian forward suffered the injury during Forest’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Leicester City. The incident occurred when Awoniyi collided forcefully with the goalpost while attempting to convert a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga. Despite the clear pain, he continued playing due to the team having no substitutions left—raising concerns over player safety and match-day medical protocols.

According to official reports, Awoniyi was placed in a medically induced coma to stabilize his condition and minimize stress on his body after surgery. He has now successfully come out of the coma and is showing signs of steady improvement. While the club has not provided a specific date for his release from hospital, the prognosis appears hopeful.

Since joining Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022, Awoniyi has become a key figure in the squad, scoring 17 goals in 73 appearances. His physical presence, work ethic, and finishing ability have made him a fan favorite and a critical part of Forest’s attack.

The football community, teammates, and fans across the globe have poured in their support and well-wishes for Awoniyi’s swift recovery. Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has also expressed concern over how the incident was handled during the game, calling for greater care when it comes to player health.

As Awoniyi begins his rehabilitation journey, the club and fans alike will be hoping to see him return to the pitch stronger than ever.

We wish Taiwo a full and speedy recovery. Football is more than a game—it’s about people. And today, the game stands united for one of its own.
