Chelsea Charged by FA Over Sectarian Chanting at Fulham
Chelsea have been charged by the Football Association after supporters were reported for discriminatory chanting during the club’s opening-weekend win at Fulham.
The charge relates to an incident in the ninth minute of the Blues’ 3-2 victory at Craven Cottage on 24 August.
The FA says the club breached Rule E21 by failing to ensure its fans did not behave in an improper or abusive way.
The governing body also alleges the behaviour was discriminatory because it referenced religion or belief.
What happened at Craven Cottage?
Reports say a section of the travelling Chelsea support sang “Flute for 50 Pence”, a sectarian song containing anti-Catholic and anti-IRA lyrics.
The club moved quickly after the match. The following day, Chelsea emailed supporters who had attended the game.
The email said the club had received multiple reports of sectarian chanting from a small group of fans in the away end.
Chelsea’s response
Chelsea have made clear they do not condone chants that target any protected characteristic.
The club warned that any supporter found responsible faces serious consequences, including:
Indefinite suspension from attending all Chelsea matches
Ejection from the stadium
The club has not yet said publicly whether it will accept or contest the FA charge.
Not the first time
This is not the first sectarian incident linked to Chelsea supporters.
In 2021, the club condemned a fan after footage spread online appearing to show sectarian abuse aimed at John McGinn, who was then an Aston Villa midfielder.
The FA has taken a firmer line on discriminatory chanting in recent seasons, and clubs have faced heavy penalties.
West Ham, for example, were fined £120,000 and handed an action plan after their fans sang anti-gay chants during a match at Stamford Bridge.
What could Chelsea face?
If the charge is proven, an independent Regulatory Commission will decide the sanction.

The charge comes during a stop-start campaign for the Blues.

Their last outing before the international break was a 3-0 defeat to Brentford.
