Manchester United Complete £48m Andrey Santos Signing from Chelsea
Manchester United have officially completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea, marking the club’s first permanent addition of the summer under new head coach Michael Carrick.
The Deal: £48m Plus Add-Ons
The transfer is worth a guaranteed £48 million, with a further £2 million available in potential add-ons, taking the total package close to £50 million.
Chelsea have also negotiated a 10% sell-on clause, meaning they will benefit financially if United decide to sell the midfielder on in the future.
Santos has put pen to paper on a long-term contract at Old Trafford, running until June 2031 with the option of a further year.
The 22-year-old completed his medical before finalising the move, officially becoming a Manchester United player.
Why United Went for Santos
United’s midfield has been stretched thin heading into the new season.
Casemiro’s departure left a gap in the middle of the park, and long-term injury concerns for Manuel Ugarte only added to the pressure on Jason Wilcox and the club’s recruitment team to bring in fresh legs.
Santos arrives with Premier League experience already under his belt, having made 28 top-flight appearances for Chelsea.
He previously impressed on loan at both Nottingham Forest and French side Strasbourg, showing his versatility and adaptability across different footballing environments.
Speaking after finalising his move, Santos said everything about Manchester United feels special, adding that it is an incredible feeling to represent a club that some of his own footballing idols once played for.
From Vasco da Gama to Old Trafford
Santos began his senior career at Brazilian giants Vasco da Gama before making the switch to Chelsea in 2023.
Since then, he has developed steadily, even amid growing competition for midfield minutes at Stamford Bridge — a situation that only intensified after Moises Caicedo signed a contract extension through to 2033.
With regular first-team football harder to come by in west London, a move to Old Trafford offers Santos a fresh platform to establish himself as a key midfield figure in the Premier League.
What’s Next for United’s Rebuild?
Santos won’t be the only midfield name on United’s radar this summer.
The club have been closely tracking Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans, with reports suggesting talks are progressing well and that a release clause in the Belgian’s contract could simplify negotiations.
Elsewhere, United’s proposed £35 million deal for Atalanta’s Ederson has hit a snag after a medical flagged an injury concern.
The move isn’t dead just yet, though — sources suggest United could reopen talks later in the window depending on how the situation develops.
Importantly, Santos’ arrival is not being viewed as an alternative to Ederson, but as a separate piece of the midfield puzzle.
The Bottom Line
Andrey Santos becomes Michael Carrick’s first permanent signing as Manchester United head coach, and a clear statement of intent as the club works to rebuild its midfield options.
With more names still being pursued before the transfer window closes, this could be just the start of a busy summer at Old Trafford.
