Sunderland Complete Thomas Meunier Signing as Belgium World Cup Defender Joins on Free Transfer

Sunderland have completed the signing of experienced Belgian defender Thomas Meunier on a free transfer, adding a wealth of international and European pedigree to their squad ahead of the new season.

The 34-year-old has signed a two-year contract after leaving French side Lille.

Meunier arrives with an outstanding résumé.

The right-back has represented some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Trabzonspor, and Lille, while also earning more than 80 caps for Belgium.

He was part of Belgium’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing invaluable tournament experience to Wearside.

Speaking after completing the move, Meunier said he was “hugely excited” to begin a new chapter with Sunderland, highlighting the club’s ambition and the opportunity to compete in European football as key reasons behind his decision.

For Sunderland, this is a statement signing. Meunier’s leadership, tactical intelligence and attacking quality from right-back should provide healthy competition and guidance for the club’s younger defenders.

His experience in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and on the international stage could prove crucial during a demanding campaign.
