Tottenham Urged to Avoid Roberto De Zerbi Appointment Amid Greenwood Controversy

Growing Pressure on Spurs Over Managerial Direction
Tottenham Hotspur are facing increasing pressure over their next managerial appointment, with a prominent supporters’ group urging the club not to consider Roberto De Zerbi due to concerns surrounding his past comments about Mason Greenwood.

De Zerbi, who recently left Olympique de Marseille, has been linked with a potential move to North London as a replacement for interim manager Igor Tudor.

However, opposition from sections of the fanbase is beginning to shape the narrative around his candidacy.
Fans’ Groups Voice Strong Concerns
Women of the Lane, a supporters’ group focused on tackling sexism and misogyny in football, have publicly opposed the idea of De Zerbi taking charge.

Their concerns stem from comments made by the Italian coach in November, when he described Greenwood as a “good guy” who had paid a “heavy price” following his legal case.

The group stated that such remarks raise “serious questions about judgement and leadership,” arguing that a club of Tottenham’s stature must carefully consider the broader message its leadership sends.

Additional criticism came from Proud Lilywhites, the club’s official LGBTQ+ supporters’ group, who stressed that public defence of controversial figures can influence football culture beyond the pitch.

Spurs Reach, representing racial and cultural diversity among fans, also warned that such framing risks normalising harmful attitudes.

The Greenwood Background
Greenwood, formerly of Manchester United, left the club in 2023 after charges including attempted rape and assault were dropped.

While no legal conviction followed, the case remains highly sensitive and continues to shape public discourse.

De Zerbi’s remarks, in which he expressed sympathy and claimed to know “a totally different person,” have since become a focal point in evaluating his suitability for high-profile roles.

Tottenham’s On-Field Struggles Add Urgency
The debate comes at a critical time for Tottenham. Under Tudor, the club has managed just one point from five Premier League matches, leaving them hovering just above the relegation zone.

This poor run has intensified the need for a long-term managerial solution, with De Zerbi seen by some as an attractive option due to his progressive style and past success at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he guided the club into European competition.

A Decision Beyond Football
Tottenham’s next move is now about more than tactics and results. The club must balance footballing ambition with its responsibility to fans and the wider community.

The growing backlash highlights how managerial appointments are increasingly judged not only on performance, but also on values, leadership, and public messaging.
