Chelsea Agree Shock Deal for Danny Welbeck as Xabi Alonso Targets Experience
Chelsea are closing in on one of the most unexpected signings of the summer transfer window, with a deal now agreed to bring Danny Welbeck to Stamford Bridge from Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Deal
The 35-year-old striker is set to sign a two-year contract, keeping him at Chelsea until the summer of 2028. A medical is expected to take place within days, with only final formalities standing between the player and an official unveiling.
No transfer fee has been confirmed by either club, though reports suggest a fee in the region of €7 million given Welbeck entered the final year of his Brighton contract.
How the Move Came Together
Welbeck reportedly asked Brighton for permission to leave amid Chelsea’s interest, and the Seagulls have granted his request after six excellent seasons on the south coast.
With just a year left on his deal, Brighton were always likely to sanction a sale for the right price rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer.
Why Chelsea Are Making the Move
It’s a striking departure from Chelsea’s recent transfer philosophy. Since the BlueCo takeover in 2022, the club has poured close to £2 billion into the market, almost exclusively on young, long-term prospects rather than proven, ready-made quality. Welbeck breaks that mould entirely.
New head coach Xabi Alonso is understood to have identified the veteran forward as exactly what his squad is missing: composure, leadership, and top-flight experience inside a young dressing room that has too often lacked consistency. Chelsea’s tenth-place finish in the Premier League last season appears to have accelerated the rethink.
Welbeck arrives with genuine credentials to back that experience up. Across his Premier League career he has made 400 appearances, and last season was arguably his best yet in front of goal — 13 league goals for Brighton, making him the club’s all-time leading Premier League scorer. He’s also a two-time Premier League winner from his days at Manchester United, along with spells at Arsenal and a lengthy England international career.
The Knock-On Effect Up Front
Welbeck’s arrival is expected to trigger a reshuffle of Chelsea’s forward line. With six senior strikers already at the club, both Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap look set for the exit door, with Premier League interest already circling both. Marc Guiu could also be squeezed out. Welbeck himself is expected to operate as experienced backup and competition for João Pedro — fittingly, his former teammate at Brighton.
It’s not the only high-profile move on the table this week either, with Jordan Henderson also reportedly closing in on a switch to Chelsea from Brentford, adding further leadership to Alonso’s engine room.
