Qatar vs Switzerland – World Cup 2026 Preview

Qatar begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign looking to erase the memories of their disappointing home tournament in 2022, where they lost all three group-stage matches.

Under coach Julen Lopetegui, the Asian champions are hoping to show how much they have progressed since then.

Switzerland enter the match as favourites. The Swiss qualified strongly and are appearing at their sixth consecutive World Cup.

Captain Granit Xhaka believes this could be Switzerland’s best World Cup squad yet, with a blend of experience and quality throughout the team.

Key Battle
The midfield contest could decide the game. Switzerland are expected to control possession through Xhaka and their experienced core, while Qatar will look to hit quickly on the counterattack and rely on the creativity of Akram Afif.

What’s at Stake?
Group B also includes Canada and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Canada and Bosnia drew 1-1 in the opening group match, meaning a victory here would put either Qatar or Switzerland in a strong position to top the group.

Prediction
Switzerland have greater tournament experience, defensive organisation, and squad depth.

Qatar are capable of causing problems, but the Swiss should have enough quality to take the points.

Prediction: Qatar 1-2 Switzerland.
