Tottenham Hotspur and Brazilian forward Richarlison have found themselves at war over the final nine months of his contract, in a saga that could end up being settled in court rather than on the pitch.
How It All Started
The trouble traces back to the final days of the summer transfer window.
Richarlison looked set for an emotional return to Everton, the club where he made his name in the Premier League, in a deal reportedly worth around £35 million to Spurs.
But the move fell apart when he couldn’t agree personal terms with the Toffees.
Things went downhill quickly from there. Head coach Roberto De Zerbi subsequently left the 29-year-old out of Tottenham’s Premier League squad altogether, meaning Richarlison faces months without any realistic path to first-team football domestically.

His lawyers are reportedly preparing to petition the courts for a unilateral termination of his contract, arguing that being frozen out of the squad effectively stops him from practicing his profession — a case that could escalate into a formal FIFA dispute if it goes further.
His representatives have already been in discussions with legal counsel to explore whether there’s a viable route out via FIFA regulations.
The stakes are high: if Richarlison gets his way, he’d be free to leave for nothing and revive his career back home in Brazil with Vasco da Gama, who are reportedly keen to bring him in.
Where Tottenham Stand
Spurs, however, aren’t budging. The club signed Richarlison from Everton for a club-record £60 million back in 2022 on a five-year deal, and they’re not willing to simply let him walk away for free.
Complicating matters further, Tottenham hold a 12-month option that could extend his contract through the end of next season — giving them significant leverage in any negotiation.

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s goalless draw with Nottingham Forest, the Italian coach revealed he’d personally offered the forward a chance to extend his contract at the start of pre-season — an offer Richarlison turned down.
