Arsenal Agree £77m Deal for Bruno Guimaraes as Newcastle’s Midfield Exodus Continues
Arsenal have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Bruno Guimaraes, ending a summer-long pursuit of the Brazilian captain and delivering another blow to a Newcastle side already reeling from a chaotic transfer window.
The Numbers
The breakthrough came after Arsenal raised their offer to around €90m (£77m) plus add-ons, having seen two earlier bids in the region of €70m and €80m knocked back.
Newcastle had originally wanted closer to €100m (£86m) for their captain but ultimately relented as the deal reached its final stages.
Guimaraes has already agreed personal terms on a long-term contract that would keep him at the Emirates until 2031.
Agent fees and performance-based bonuses are still being ironed out, but with the core club-to-club agreement in place, Arsenal are reportedly planning to schedule his medical for next week.
There’s a neat subplot to the fee too: Lyon, who sold Guimaraes to Newcastle back in January 2022, negotiated a 20% sell-on clause at the time.
That means the Ligue 1 club stand to pocket roughly £8m from this deal — a timely boost after financial troubles nearly saw them relegated and booted from Europe last season.
